Alexandra Bridge, Fraser Canyon, BC

Named for Princess Alexandra of Wales (1844-1925), wife to future King Edward VII, this is actually the second bridge of that name. The original road bridge was constructed in 1861 as part of the development of the Cariboo Road using native and Chinese labour, when BC was still a colony. It was destroyed by the rising waters of the Fraser Flood of 1892 and not rebuilt until 1926, when the new suspension bridge used the original bridge footings but placed the deck ten feet higher. Many people don’t know it still exists, because it was decommissioned in 1962, when the new Fraser bridge was finished 1 km downstream. Today, it is only accessible by foot from the nearby Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park.
